LinkedIn Detected 46% More Fake Engagement

In this week's newsletter:

  • If your social media strategy is built for in-feed value and measured with a metric built for exits, what is your reporting actually telling you?
  • LinkedIn detected 46% more inauthentic activity in the first half of 2026.
  • Everyone optimizing for Google's discussions should really get into Facebook Groups.

Hey Reader,

A few years back I interviewed Martin Huntbach and Lyndsay Cambridge on my podcast about their book Content Fortress, and I pushed back on them.

Their argument was that you should publish your prices. Mine was that I don't and I wasn't going to. I came up through B2B solution sales, where there is no list price, where the entire job is understanding a budget and building the right solution against it. Putting a number on a website felt like handing away the only leverage in the conversation.

They had the receipts, though. One of their articles was titled "Why We Are So Expensive." It ranked number one in the world for that phrase for years, and the feedback they got back was not that they were overpriced. It was that they were probably too cheap. Their sales calls went from two hours down to twenty-two minutes.

I filed it away as something that worked for them.

Then last week a client told me what happened after they published their rates. The "just send me pricing" emails stopped. What replaced them were people asking to book time. Fewer inquiries, better ones.

Here's the thing, though: there's now a second reason to do this that nobody could have seen coming back then.

AI can only cite what you publish. A study out this week found that brand-controlled pages earned 88% of citations when buyers were comparing named vendors, with product pages alone taking 24%. Meanwhile 68% of US Google searches now end without a single click.

Gated pricing used to cost you lead quality. Now it costs you a seat in the answer your buyer is actually reading.

So what are you still hiding behind a form? Hit reply and tell me, because I'm genuinely curious whether I'm the last one to work this out.

Let's jump into this week's updates!

This Week's News

Is AI Making It So Anyone Can Run Effective TikTok Ads? - TikTok just wired its Ads Manager directly into Claude and ChatGPT through a new MCP server, no API credentials and no developer required. Melissa Laurie describes it as a restaurant: Ads Manager is the restaurant, the MCP is the waiter, the AI tool is the menu. There is also a library of official TikTok skills, including a Viral Video Creator that gets creative roughly 70% of the way there. One caution worth taking seriously: the AI will recommend pausing new creative that simply has not run long enough. Challenge its suggestions and ask what else it would do. Social Media Examiner

Product Pages Get 24% Of AI Citations, Reddit & YouTube 4% - Ten Speed ran 170 buyer-style prompts through Peec AI and logged 7,387 citation appearances across AI answers. Product pages took 24.1% of them. Reddit and YouTube, the two sources everyone tells you to prioritize, combined for about 4%. If you have been pouring effort into community seeding and video while your product pages sit thin and untouched, this data says you have the ratio backwards. Add it up and brand-controllable content earned 88.3% of every citation at the moment buyers were choosing between named vendors. Search Engine Journal

15 Best eCommerce Marketing Agencies For Growing Online Brands In 2026 - I have no agency to sell you. What I have is a Clutch directory of 94 ecommerce firms, and in my latest post I narrow it to 15 and show you every filter I used. The number that matters most is service percentages, which separate a real marketing agency from a development shop wearing a marketing label. Review volume only tells you how long a firm has been listed. You are about to commit between $3,000 and $30,000 a month, and I name the big firms that did not survive my cut. Read any agency profile after this and you will see straight through it. Neal Schaffer

I Built An AEO Content Workflow That Finds LinkedIn Gaps And Fills Buffer With Writer-Ready Briefs - Violeta Maftei wired AirOps, Peec AI, and Buffer's API into a weekly loop that finds the AI prompts where her client is invisible, checks whether the company has the material to answer them, and drops writer-ready LinkedIn briefs into Buffer. She is refreshingly honest that it is too early for results. What earns your eleven minutes is the reasoning underneath: LinkedIn is the second-most-cited source in AI answers, and Scrunch data shows Unicode bold formatting cuts citation odds by 58%. Content operations are becoming systems, not calendars. Buffer

TikTok Business Account vs Personal Account: Which One Do You Actually Need? - I run a personal TikTok account, not a business one, and in my latest post I explain exactly why. Teaching social media marketing to executives at Rutgers, this is the question I field most, and it usually arrives as a worry about reach. That worry is misplaced. TikTok's published ranking signals do not include account type. The real trade-off sits elsewhere: business unlocks a clickable link at any follower count and Business Suite analytics, but closes the door on the Creator Rewards Program permanently. If you have been sitting on the switch because of something you half remember reading, the answer is in here. Neal Schaffer

LinkedIn Increases Push Against Inauthentic Activity - LinkedIn detected 46% more inauthentic activity in the first half of 2026 than in the back half of 2025, and enforcement has intensified in step. Engagement pods, automated comments, and AI-generated filler are all in scope. If any part of your LinkedIn growth depends on tactics that simulate engagement rather than earn it, the ground is shifting under you. The platform is optimizing for what it can verify as human, and reach built on automation is the first thing to go. Waiting to find out whether your approach counts is the expensive option. Facebook Groups Are Google's No. 2 Forum Source -
Everyone optimizing for Google's discussions module has been building on Reddit. Ahrefs analyzed more than 500 million search results and found Facebook sitting at number two, appearing in 38.3% of results where that module shows up, with every one of those URLs coming from a public Group. Facebook was at zero as recently as late 2024. Groups have been treated as a community play and a search dead end for about a decade, and that reading was wrong. The channel you wrote off is indexing, and almost nobody is competing for it. Search Engine Journal

Rapid AI changes Mean GEO Is A Weekly Job Now -
The quarterly SEO check-in is dead and most teams have not noticed. In the first four months of 2026, 68% of US Google searches ended without a click, and Pew found that when an AI summary sits above the results, people click a traditional listing in only 8% of visits. Shama Hyder argues the fix is structural: PR, SEO, and content pulling from the same prompt data and adjusting week after week rather than quarter after quarter. Your next quarterly review is already too far away to catch what changed. MarTech

How Do You Measure Social Media In A Zero-Click World? - Reddit accounts for 46.4% of the social content AI tools cite. YouTube takes 31.8%. Instagram gets 2.2%, TikTok 0.7%. That gap has almost nothing to do with content quality and everything to do with which platforms let AI companies read them. Ryan Sweeney builds a four-layer measurement model on top of that reality, starting from the point that referral traffic only counts one behavior, which is leaving. If your strategy is built for in-feed value and measured with a metric built for exits, what is your reporting actually telling you? Ignite Social Media

AI Made Content Cheap. It Made Thought Leadership Priceless. - He asked ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini the same question and all three agreed. For about four seconds that looked like proof. Then he remembered all three were trained on the same internet, arriving at the same place because they had read the same things. Agreement is not evidence when everyone studied from the same notes. The same trap catches people: ask five specialists in one industry and they converge because they all read the same three books. Consensus is the cheapest thing AI produces. Jeff Bullas
